Plant-based meat alternatives, like those offered by Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods, are taking off in the US, and are next set to target China. Not only is China the most welcoming market for plant-based alternatives to meat, but one currently in desperate need of protein replacements, given half of its hog supply has been wiped out by a pandemic of African Swine Flu. The Chinese government has recently been encouraging citizens to eat more plant-based foods, just as local and foreign firms have begun to roll out offerings in the race to bite off the largest chunk of the country’s nearly $10 billion market for faux meat.
