Microsoft is reportedly eyeing a $10 billion investment in up-and-coming artificial intelligence (AI) developer OpenAI. Microsoft has already funded the startup to the tune of nearly $1 billion, but the rising popularity of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and DALL-E software have prompted itself and several venture funds to partake in a new tender offering that could double OpenAI’s valuation to $29 billion. Reports suggest Microsoft is already testing out GPT functionality within its Office suite.

Though the success of OpenAI’s tools is groundbreaking, they are also ripe for misuse – particularly by cybercriminals who want to leverage AI to enhance their hacking capabilities. This could, in turn create another market for AI solutions to fight back against the autonomous generation of new cyber exploits

OpenAI, the organization behind the artificial intelligence (AI) tools ChatGPT and DALL-E, could be valued at $29 billion in a new tender offer, according to The Wall Street Journal. It was also reported this morning that Microsoft is in discussions to invest as much as $10 billion as part of the offer. Crunchbase News notes that OpenAI has received the majority of its previous $1 billion in funding from Microsoft.

The potential deal, which also involves venture firms Thrive Capital and Founders Fund deal, would more than double the $14 billion valuation set during OpenAI’s most recent tender offer in 2021. OpenAI’s applications are primarily focused on generative AI, which produces unique images, text, and other mediums of communication from human prompts.

DALL-E and its successor, DALL-E 2, create original, realistic images and art from a text description that is input by a human user. It can also make realistic edits to existing images, adding new elements to a pre-existing image or removing elements, while taking shadows, reflections, and textures into account.
